Music education is a field of study that entails teaching and learning of music. The learning domains in this field include the cognitive domain (knowledge acquisition), psychomotor domain (skills development) and the effective domain (the willingness of the learner to receive, internalize and share what they have learned). Music education from pre-school to post-secondary is common in many countries because music involvement through all these phases is considered a fundamental component in the growth of human behavior and culture. Music, is just like a language, it is an accomplishment that is used to distinguish humans as a species.
Music education in elementary schools involves kids being taught how to use musical instruments like keyboards and recorders. Children are also taught how to sing in small choirs. This serves as the foundation. In Secondary schools they are taught how to perform in different types of music ensemble, e.g. orchestra, choir, school choir , marching band, concert and jazz bands. One can also join the music club in to perfect their skills. Various concepts have been developed or refined to teach music education, some of which have had a widespread impact. These methods include;
The Dalcroze method
Also known as the eurhythmics or rhythmic gymnastics was developed in the 20th century. It focuses on the concept of structure, rhythm, and musical expression by use of movements. Its aim is to allow a student to gain experience and physical awareness of music through learning that engages all the senses, most importantly the kinesthetic.
The Kodaly method
Focuses mainly on the importance of physical instruction and the response to music. It focuses mainly on teaching music theory and music notation via various written and verbal music forms.
The Orff Schulwerk
This method of teaching music education focuses on the students ability to involve in rudimentary forms of music, use of the basic rhythms and melodies. Orff Schulwerk was conceived on an approach to make musicians in every student through the integration of music, speech, movement and drama.
The Suzuki Method
Developed in Japan, this method uses music education to enrich the moral character and lives of its students. It focuses on creating the same learning environment for music learning with what the student has when learning their native language. For Suzuki Method, The ideal environment for learning music includes, love, praise, repetition, rote training and quality examples. This method is quite popular internationally.
